Application of cold forging and warm forging technology of planetary gears

The planetary gear is a kind of gear structure, usually one or more external gears rotate around a sun gear. In addition to planetary gears that can rotate around their own rotating shafts like fixed-axis gears. Their rotating shafts also rotate with the planet carrier around the axis of other gears. The rotation around its own axis is called “rotation,” and the rotation around the axis of other gears is called ‘revolution’. This is just like the planets in the solar system, hence the name planetary gear

Compared with ordinary gear transmission, planetary gear transmission has a series of outstanding advantages when their parts materials, mechanical properties, manufacturing accuracy, working conditions, etc., are the same. So it is often used as a planetary reducer/planetary gear reducer, speed increaser, differential and reversing mechanism, and other special purposes. The main features of planetary gear transmission are as follows:

1) The size and weight. The planetary reducer is small in size, light in weight, compact structure, large transmission power, and high load capacity.

2) The planetary reducer has a large transmission ratio. As long as the type of planetary transmission and the gear allocation plan is appropriately selected, a few gears can be used to obtain a large transmission ratio.

3) The planetary reducer has high transmission efficiency. Because the planetary gear transmission adopts a symmetrical split transmission structure, even with several evenly distributed planetary gears, the reaction forces acting on the center wheel and the rotating arm bearings will balance with each other. This is beneficial as it improves transmission efficiency. With a proper selection of the transmission type and a reasonable structure layout, efficiency can be 0.97-0.99.

4) The planetary reducer moves smoothly, has strong resistance to shock and vibration. Due to the use of several identical planetary wheels evenly distributed around the center wheel, the inertial forces of the planetary wheels and the rotating arm will balance with each other. The number of teeth involved in the meshing increases. So the planetary reducer/planetary gear reducer has a smooth transmission movement, strong resistance to shock and vibration.

Even with the above characteristics and advantages, the planetary gear reducer also has some shortcomings. For example, the structure is more complicated than the fixed shaft gear transmission. However, the forging technology is making the production of the planetary gear reducer easy.

Today, the manufacturing of planetary gear reducers uses cold and warm forging. These are forging technologies that address the shortcoming of traditional forming methods. Cold and warm forged planetary gear reducers have the advantages of near-net shapes and high material utilization rates. They also have fine grains, reduced cutting processing, fast batch delivery speed, and lower production cost.

The production of near-net shapes helps get rid of the finishing work. This is one of the ways it reduces the cost of production. The finishing step in hot forging and casting would need machine and labor, but cold and warm forging is getting rid of it. The reduction of waste due to high material utilization also helps cut the production cost.

Cold and warm forging produces fine grain size, key in the hardening and strengthening planetary gear reducer. Therefore, cold or warm forged planetary gear reducers can withstand the rough conditions they work in. Mass production is another benefit of cold and warm forging.
