Common Methods To Improve The Quality Of Forgings, Which One Have You Used?

In order to improve the surface quality of the forgings, improve the cutting conditions of the forgings and prevent the continuous expansion of surface defects, it is required to clean the surface of the blanks and forgings during the forging production process. Which equipment have you used for pickling, sandblasting (pill), shot blasting, roller, vibration, and descaling machine? Well, here are some of the cleaning methods.

Roller cleaning

Forgings in a rotating drum where they collide or grind to remove the scales on the blank. Although the equipment used in this cleaning method is simple and convenient, it is noisy. Therefore, it’s only suitable for small and medium forgings that can withstand a certain impact and deformation.

Vibration cleaning

The method includes mixing a certain proportion of abrasives and additives in the forgings and placing them in a vibrating container. The cleaning relies on the vibration of the container to grind the workpiece and the abrasives to grind away the oxide scales and burrs on the surface of the forgings. It is mostly a cleaning method that is suitable for cleaning and polishing small and medium precision forgings. However, there is a need for additives, and the environmental assessment is not easy to pass.

Pickling cleaning

The method uses a chemical reaction to remove metal oxide scales. Small and medium-sized forgings are usually installed in a basket in batches, and completed through several processes such as degreasing, pickling corrosion, rinsing, and drying. It is inevitable to generate gases harmful to the human body during this cleaning. Forging workers are generally difficult to accept.

Sandblasting (shot) and shot blasting

Sandblasting (shot) is powered by compressed air, making the sand or steel shot produce high-speed motion (the working pressure of sandblasting is 0.2~0.3MPa, and the working pressure of shot blasting is 0.5~ 0.6MPa), to spray the surface of the forging to remove the oxide scale.

Shot blasting relies on the centrifugal force of rotating the impeller at high speed (2000~30001r/min). It projects the steel shot onto the surface of the forging to remove the oxide scale. In addition to that, Sandblasting has large dust, low production efficiency and high cost. It is mostly good for forgings with special technical requirements and special materials. Widely used on stainless steel, titanium alloy. However, get effective dust removal technical measures.

Descaling machine

The cleaning of the descaling machine adopts the principle of high-pressure water dephosphorization. The method offers high efficiency and has no special requirements on the shape of the forging. One forging cleaning takes about 3-5 seconds, and there is no damage to the forging. Environmental protection and pollution-free, an environmental assessment will not encounter obstacles, which is a relatively preferable choice to the above methods.
